Before Making the Leap, I had finished my undergraduate degree and was writing up my final project for my master’s degree. I thought it would be a good time to start applying for jobs so I would have one lined up once I completed the master’s program. I found it difficult to find a job and got several rejections. I did not know where I was going wrong and why I was not getting any interviews. A lot of jobs also required a couple of years of relevant experience which I did not have so this discouraged me from applying for certain roles.
I realised I needed help getting a job and visited my local Job Centre. I spoke to a work coach who suggested MTL and gave me a number to call. I immediately called to get an insight into the organisation and spoke with Jamal who was very friendly. I then came into the MTL office for an introductory meeting.
The 3-week workshop highlighted strengths I was not aware I had. One of the most valuable lessons I learned is the importance of being able to sell myself and how to do this effectively. I previously found it very difficult not only to identify my strengths but to speak about them. Attending the workshop also gave me exposure to new industries I had never considered. It was great meeting and interacting with people that were in similar positions to me. I was able to learn a lot from the other members of the group and was supported by them. Overall, MTL equipped me with skills that made me more confident in approaching application forms, interviews, and presentations.
I found the industry I am currently working through a one-day exposure to private markets program organised by Making The Leap and StepStone. This was followed by a one-week research internship. I was then offered a longer internship with a full-time opportunity at the end of it. Getting the job offer I was ecstatic; I was excited to be joining a great firm where I felt valued. I am grateful for the opportunity to not only having attended the workshop but to meeting inspiring people such as Tunde and the entire MTL team. I would recommend Making The Leap to anyone who is committed to improving their lives. It is an experience that has been enriching and created life-changing opportunities for me.
